An Environmental Management System (EMS) enables a company to improve their environmental performance by reducing the impacts from their operations, products and services. Regardless of the size of the company, or the nature of the work that is carried out, a management system provides a structured approach to fulfill goals and objectives. It is formed of policies, processes and controls, reviewed by management, to enhance training and monitor performance.

For compliance with environmental law and regulation, an Environmental Management System should include the following: environmental policies and objectives; legal and other requirements; risk management; implementation of working procedures to achieve continuous improvements to support environmental protection; and the reduction or prevention of pollution. ISO Management System Standards (MSS) help companies to manage their policies and procedures through a cycle of self-evaluation, correction and improvement of operations.
