A grievance mechanism is a formal procedure and framework for individuals, employees, stakeholders, companies and/or the wider community to address complaints and grievances.

Grievances are raised as a result of negative company activity and operations. A grievance mechanism could be available to a company's employees and external stakeholders or could be an internal document only available for employees. Individual employee grievances can relate to areas such as recruitment, discrimination, harassment or victimization, about concerns of wages, poor relations between employees, working overtime, holiday allowance or working conditions.
By law, every company needs a formal and written grievance procedure. A grievance mechanism should explain who to contact if employees/suppliers have an issue, the grievance procedure process and the response times for each stage.
